What's Friendfactor's mission and what if I disagree with it?
We're all about making gay and transgender rights about gay and transgender people, not politics or ideology. We're dedicated to gaining full freedoms for your gay and transgender friends, faster. We realize that freedoms mean different things to different people. We're here to empower you and your beliefs. Friendfactor provides opportunity for people to take small actions that will help change hearts, minds, and laws. So, in short, our platform is the technology, the ideas and the power to accelerate change lie within you. We hope you don't disagree with that.

Why is the site for straight friends?
Public support for equal rights of LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bi, Trans) Americans is at an all-time high. And yet, U.S. law shows an ongoing disregard for their well-being: they can legally be fired in 29+ states, evicted from their homes in 30+, and denied the 1,100+ rights granted to federally recognized married couples, just because of who they are. Because LGBT people make up less than 5% of the U.S. population, significant and rapid change hinges on the movement’s ability to identify new ways of engaging more straight supporters. To dramatically accelerate the pace of change for gay rights, more American voters must become champions for the issue and use their voices to influence a much broader audience. Friendfactor sees an opportunity to create an online space in which more people can be good friends to their gay friends, simply by taking easy actions that will help all Americans achieve equal rights, faster.

Why did you choose to use gay instead of LGBT?
Friendfactor's primary aim is to dramatically accelerate the pace of change for LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bi, Transgender) rights. We want to welcome millions of new supporters to join the LGBT movement by giving these newcomers inviting opportunities to support their LGBT friends. We particularly want to reach out to people who have never joined an LGBT rights organization, and yet, would still sign up to support an LGBT friend. Incidentally, most of these potential new supporters are straight.
Everyone must start somewhere, and most new supporters have much to learn about LGBT rights and experiences. We believe that if we meet new supporters where they are – which may be a very different place than where existing supporters and advocates are – that we can speed up the current pace of change in this country. Only by creating a larger safe space can new conversations start happening among people who do not know where or how to begin. Friendfactor can help start these conversations, but we believe it's the job of friends to actually have them.

Does Friendfactor support certain candidates?
We want to change the paradigm of gay and transgender rights from an ideological issue to one that is much more basic, personal, and inclusive: it’s all about helping your friends. As part of that, we're here to help educate people about the freedoms that their gay* and transgender friends lack in employment, housing and marriage. We'll never back a particular candidate, but, as good friends do, we will provide information about issues that are important. And we'll give you some cool tools to share what and who you believe in.
